| MORPETH HERALD Published Date: 01 November 2007 Golf Correspondent PONTELAND'S Richard Robson-Crosby, the 15-year-old four-handicap golfer, was pipped at the post in the Autumn meeting of the Northumberland Junior Golfing Association at Newbiggin. He shot an excellent one under par 71, but lost the title over the last nine holes after tying with Daniel Shevill, the 17-year-old scratch player from Prudhoe. Ironically, on the first nine holes, Robson-Crosby shot a one under par 36, to Daniel Shevill’s 39, but on the back nine, the roles were reversed. Shevill let the fireworks fly — fitting for this time of the year — with a superb three under par 32, including a crackerjack of an eagle three at the 490 yard par five 14th. |

| HEXHAM COURANT
Dan stars in New Mexico MAKING quite a name for himself on the tough American colleges golf circuit is Stocksfield’s Daniel Shevill. Daniel is in his freshman year at the College of Midland Texas majoring in business administration. However, it is on the golf course he has really made his mark, winning the Ronnie Black Collegiate Invitational at Lovington Golf and Country Club in New Mexico. Daniel shot a gross 70 to beat team-mate South Africa’s Heinrich Fryinck into second place, and help Midland College win the team event. The event was reduced to 18 holes because of snow, and it was also a gale force wind. The Saturday before it was 75F and sunny. Daniel says he is now adapting better to the Texas winds and the different types of grasses on the greens and around them. Daniel was exempt from qualifying for the next tournament the New Mexico Military Institute, Bronco Invitational is Roswell, New Mexico. He finished in third place finishing one over par for the over 54 holes. His team Midland College won the team event. |

Shevill in hunt with back to back wins DANIEL Shevill has become Northumberland’s answer to Martin Kaymer by landing back-to-back victories in the Green Jacket series with a triumph in the Camerons Scratch Open at Ponteland. Just as he did in the Mammoet Newbiggin Silver Tankard, the 20-year-old from the Prudhoe club beat England international Simon Lee, The Journal Champion of Champions, into second place. Both players harbour ambitions of playing on the European Tour, a stage Kaymer is currently dominating after successive wins at Loch Lomond and Versailles. For the time being, Shevill will have to settle for becoming the first Northumberland golfer to lead the ZFL Golf Order of Merit after equalling the Ponteland course record with a five-under 67 in his second round. There was a sense of anti-climax after Northumberland Under-21 Matchplay Champion Shevill (71 67) tied on 138 with Lee (70 68). The 36-hole scratch event was decided on a countback over the closing nine holes rather than a play-off, and it would have added to the sense of occasion had the rivals gone out for an evening duel. Shevill was in the same group as Jason Jones, a Dixon Cup winner from the Saltburn club. Jones got the closest view possible of the winner and said: “Danny is a very powerful player and exciting to watch because he goes for it all the time. “On a course like Ponteland, there is margin for error because there is room between the trees to launch those big drives of his. He putted very well and his all-round game was good. He looked to me as if he is definitely good enough to get a shot in the Northumberland county team. He is perfect for matchplay. He is always going to make birdies, he’s an excellent player.” Shevill, from Stocksfield, says he has toned down a “partying lifestyle” to place more focus on his golf and this season’s results suggest it is a logical decision. Another decision also paid off regarding a clash of dates. Shevill has already qualified for this season’s Champions at De Vere Slaley Hall on September 6 by winning the county junior title. So he decided to play in the rankings event at Ponteland rather than defend his club title the same day, county player James Curry, who tied for third place in the Newbiggin Green Jacket event, winning the Prudhoe club championship. Shevill’s decisive moment arrived at his last hole of the day. With the wind in excess of 20mph, he put a 30-yard draw on a 230-yard approach shot out of the rough. He used his three-iron to skilfully bend the ball around a tree – and over a bunker guarding the front of the green – leaving him with a comfortable two-putt for the birdie which was to bring him victory over Lee. |
