BREAKING NEWS.....

NEWCASTLE JOURNAL 09/09/09.   Daniel Shevill offered Texas scholarship!

Daniel Shevill, runner-up in The Journal Champion of Champions at De Vere Slaley Hall, has been offered a full scholarship to return to Midland College in Texas, Kenneth Ferrie’s alma mater.  This was where Shevill studied last year and was a member of the victorious National Collegiate Championship team. Midland College has won 20 National Championships in sports and has produced 192 All Americans, including Ferrie, Ashington’s double European Tour winner.

Shevill, a county player from the Prudhoe club, is this season’s Northumberland Junior Matchplay Champion and winner of successive ZFL Order of Merit Green Jacket tournaments at Newbiggin and Ponteland.  Shevill shot a 63 which included successive eagles and has equalled the Ponteland record.  Battling flu-type symptoms at Slaley Hall on Sunday, he lost the chance of a Champions play-off on the last green, where he three-putted from 50 feet. Midland College’s offer has prompted Shevill to withdraw his entry for European Tour School.  He said: “I was really excited about going head with the pros. However, completely out of the blue, Midland contacted me and offered a fully sponsored scholarship.  “My coach in 2008, Delnor Poss, has been tracking my progress this year and wanted me back. It was a no-brainer and I have accepted as it will benefit my academic studies and my golf.”  Midland College wanted Shevill to return this month, but he aims to win the ZFL Green Jacket series and improve his plus one handicap. His target is to enter top tournaments such as the Amateur Championship next season.

The 20-year-old Shevill, a former Scottish Under-14 Strokeplay Champion, said: “Fortunately, Midland understood and supported the importance of these commitments. As a result, I will return to the USA in January and stay until December.”  Coach Poss said: “Daniel has had a great 2009 season and he was a valued student when studying here in 2008. As a result we have offered him a full scholarship. This will give Daniel the opportunity to further his development as a player."
